Common TCA Peel Questions

  • A TCA peel is a synthetic chemical acidic solution that is used for skin rejuvenation. It can be formulated in medium to deep strengths and is different from light or “lunchtime peels“ as it penetrates deeper through the superficial epidermis into the living cells causing more aggressive peeling and results.

  • After the face has been thoroughly cleansed, a trichloroacetic acid solution is applied evenly over the entire face and neck. The acidic pH level causes the molecules to penetrate through the epidermis affecting live cells causing them to lift up and separate off.

The chemical peel solution stays active for approximately five minutes until it neutralizes. A second and third layer may be applied during the treatment time.

The more layers of solution applied, the deeper the peel will be.

The number of layers applied varies per person depending upon how quickly the skin reacts to the solution.

During the chemical peel process, the skin will begin to "frost," turning white. The conclusion of the peel is determined when the frosting is even over the entire area.

  • Your skin will feel tingly and warm following the treatment and for up to a few hours.

Approximately 24 to 36 hours post-treatment, your skin will start to peel for up to seven days.

One week post-treatment will reveal a brighter skin tone.

One month following the treatment will reveal lighter skin discoloration.

  • For 24 hours post-treatment, you should not wash or add water-based products to the skin as the peel is still active.

Wash your skin gently and avoid picking any peeling skin as this can cause scarring.

You may resume your regular skincare except for alpha hydroxy acid and Retin-A for 14 days.

Avoid direct sunlight and apply SPF 30 or higher daily.

You may apply Neosporin or Vaseline to expedite healing and reduce flaking.

  • One TCA peel will produce results; however, depending on your goals and severity of the skin condition, a series of 3 peels may be performed in one treatment per month increments to achieve your desired result. Ongoing retreatment should be assessed with your skincare provider, depending upon your goals.
